CBD Dosage Guide: How Much Should I Take?

Taking CBD is simple, but it’s a completely personal journey and not at all prescriptive. All of our bodies are different, and how we respond to CBD is too. This means it’s just about impossible for brands to give you a definitive answer on exactly how much to take. It can depend on the reasons you’re taking it for, how you feel before you begin your CBD journey and how your body responds to CBD. The key with CBD is to experiment with different dosages and strengths and find what works for you. In this article, we’ll discuss how to take CBD (whether you’ve chosen CBD oils or capsules), when to take it and how often. Or, you can skip to our CBD dosage recommendations in the tables below. Let’s get started.

THE RESEARCH

Research indicates differing dosages of CBD for each targetted benefit.

The only FDA-approved CBD medication is called Epidiolex, and it treats seizures. The dosage for seizure treatment calls for 2.5 mg per kg of body weight twice daily. After one week, patients can double their dose if necessary.

Research in progress suggests that CBD could be a potential treatment for various health concerns, such as chronic stress and irritable bowel syndrome. More research is needed before making any concrete claims, but the results are promising.

Because the ability to study CBD is relatively new, there is no definite guide on CBD dosages. It is hoped that researchers can come to a consensus in the near future on dosing practices for each ailment. For now, it’s largely accepted that users should start with small doses and slowly increase intake day by day until they notice clear improvement.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

So, how much CBD oil should you take? It depends on your endocannabinoid system. Not everyone’s body reacts the same – some people need to take more than others to achieve the same effects. Pay close attention to how your body responds and change your dosage accordingly the next time.

It also depends on why you’re taking CBD. Make sure to research recommended doses or talk to an expert about how much CBD is needed to target your specific need.

Other than speaking with an expert, reading peer-reviewed journals is the next best way to get reliable information on CBD dosage.

What is the Proper CBD Dosage for You?

Keep in mind the following factors when calculating your CBD dosage:

- Reason for use

- Body weight

- Method of administration (oral, vapor, topical, etc.)

- Individual sensitivity

Current research suggests that effective dosage starts as low as 2.5 milligrams with a maximum daily intake of 1,500 milligrams for more severe conditions. Beginners should start with 2.5 mg and increase intake each day by 5 mg. Once you see results, maintain that dose each day. There’s no need to take more if you’ve found what works for you.

Remember, how you take CBD impacts how quickly it takes effect. Oral ingestion usually takes 30-60 minutes to kick in, whereas inhaling via smoke or vape takes as little as 10 minutes.

HOW TO CALCULATE CBD DOSAGE BY WEIGHT

There’s no surefire way to calculate CBD dosage, but the following CBD dose guide is a general standard:

[YOUR WEIGHT IN KILLOGRAMS] x [.5 MG OF CBD ]= [YOUR DOSE IN MG CBD]

For example,

If you weigh 60 kg, your recommended dose would be

60 x .5 = 30 mg

Note that the Food Standards Agency recommends not exceeding 70mg of CBD per day. There are no current findings regarding CBD overdosage or lethal amounts of CBD, but until more research is done, it’s best to follow expert recommendations.

HOW TO CALCULATE CBD DOSAGE BY TYPE

CBD comes in many forms: capsules, oils, tinctures, gummies, beverages, and even salves. Some methods kick in more quickly than others, so keep this in mind when trying to tell whether or not you’re feeling the effects.

CBD dosage stays the same no matter what method you’re using. Note that topical options might require a slightly higher dose because they can be less efficient.

If you’re trying to treat localised pain or a skin condition, topical CBD products are your best bet. Chronic pain or stress might be better suited with an oil or tincture.

CAPSULES

Like other edible methods, CBD capsules can take up to an hour to take effect, and they can take 2-8 hours with an average of 6 hours. To calculate your CBD dosage, use the following formula:

[YOUR WEIGHT IN KILLOGRAMS] x [.5 MG OF CBD ]= [YOUR DOSE IN MG CBD]

For example,

If you weigh 60 kg, your recommended dose would be

60 x .5 = 30 mg

It’s not as easy to adjust dosage with capsules. Whereas with oils, you can add more by 1 mg, 2 mg, etc. You cannot split up the dosage of a capsule. You have to double the dose with each incremental increase.

HOW MUCH CBD OIL TO TAKE

Regarding how much cbd oil to take, experts recommend taking .5 mg for each kg of body weight. The average dosage is 20-50 mg.

CBII offers CBD oil drops in 200 mg and 500 mg bottles. We recommend starting with a half pipette’s worth (about 10 mg) dropped under the tongue twice daily. Hold it there for 30-60 seconds, and swallow.

Holding the oil under the tongue, or sublingual administration, allows the body to absorb CBD via the tongue’s mucus membrane. This process is more efficient and allows the effects to take hold more quickly by entering the bloodstream without being digested.

GUMMIES

The typical dosage for CBD gummies is 20-50 mg per day. You can use your weight to calculate your recommended dosage. Take .5mg of CBD per kg of weight. For example, if you weigh 60 kg, your recommended dose would be 60 kg x .5 mg = 30 mg.

CBD gummies usually take 30 minutes to one hour to take effect. CBII gummies contain 25 mg each. Take 1-2 CBII gummies daily (25 mg – 50 mg). Chew until fully dissolved. The Food Standards Agency recommends not exceeding 70mg of CBD per day.

CBD DOSAGE FOR POTENTIAL BENEFITS

The beauty of CBD is that it has potential benefits for many different causes. With respect to this versatility, it’s logical that the different uses of CBD require different doses.

There is no universal dosing guide just yet. The following dose recommendations are suggestions based on existing research and findings. As you experiment with different dosages of CBD, pay attention to your body’s responses and note what works best.

RELAXATION

How much CBD should you take to relax? Recent studies found that CBD has an impact on stress relief. Experts suggest a mild to heavy CBD dose for relaxation purposes.

On average, people take 25 to 65 milligrams per day to promote relaxation. This varies from person to person based on weight, sensitivity, and the form of the CBD.

It's best to start with a minimal dose and increase the dosage by 5 mg daily until you begin to feel stress relief.

POTENTIAL PAIN RELIEF

Research suggests that higher CBD dosages are required for pain relief. The majority protocol is to start at 5 mg and work up to 40 mg daily until pain relief is achieved.

That said, potential relief depends on the severity and cause of the pain. Some of our clients have reported success with around 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Other clients need much more to subside their severe chronic pain.

If you're interested in CBD for pain, try out CBII's full-spectrum CBD topical salves or oil droppers.

FOR SLEEPING

There are a handful of relatively small studies that suggest CBD can improve the quality of sleep. Because researchers were only able to begin studying CBD for sleep a few years ago, a fail-safe dosage of CBD for sleep hasn’t yet been agreed upon.

Available findings suggest that small doses of CBD have a slightly energizing effect, and heavier doses may support sleep. Start by taking 25 milligrams in the afternoon or before bedtime. Observe how you feel, and adjust dosage slightly the following day as you see fit.

MOOD BOOST

Taking CBD for mood-boosting purposes is one of the most popular uses. Preliminary studies have uncovered that CBD changes how the brain interacts with Serotonin, our "feel good" neurotransmitter.

Experts suggest a mild to heavy dosage of CBD for relaxation purposes. The average person can start with 10-25 mg of CBD once daily. It's encouraged to start with a small dose and increase it by 5 mg daily until you achieve the desired results.

NAUSEA

Preliminary research has found that CBD can help reduce nausea, vomiting, and stomach upset. It's supposed that this is because CBD reacts with serotonin to help thwart the unpleasant symptoms.

There is no universal correct CBD dosage for nausea. It's best to start by taking the recommended dose for the specific problem you're using. With this in mind, it's generally thought that low to moderate amounts of CBD help with nausea.

CBD DOSAGE CHARTS

The below table will help you understand the dosage you should take of our CBII CBD oils as well as how much MG of CBD can be found in each drop of CBD oil and capsule.

The below is just a guideline. You can experiment with different dosages as long as you don’t exceed the Food Standards Agency’s recommendation of 70 mg a day.

CBD OIL DOSAGE RECOMMENDED

It can be unclear how to measure CBD dosage within your oil dropper. Consider how many milligrams of CBD are in each drop (not each full pipette). This depends on the potency of your oil drops. CBD law in the UK requires sellers to test products for cannabinoid content; make sure to buy from a trusted brand like CBII so you can be confident in the accuracy of your dosage.

CBD CAPSULES RECOMMENDED DOSAGE

Large dose capsules (20 mg plus) make it difficult to pinpoint the correct dosage fo CBD for you because you cannot make adjustments without doubling the already high dosage.

CBII CBD capsules come in small dosages to make it easier to control how much you take.

CBD DOSAGE CHART: MILLIGRAMS VS MILLILITRES VS PERCENTAGE

500mg, 5%, 10ml – what does this all mean and how does it relate to the strength of the oil? When choosing CBD, there are a lot of numbers to consider and it can get confusing.

In short, the MG (milligrams) refers to the amount of cannabinoids or the concentration of CBD within the oil. Many people think that this alone determines the strength of the CBD oil, but this isn’t true as most people will measure their intake in drops or milliliters of liquid.

That’s why you need to take into account one more thing: the size of the bottle.

EXAMPLE

For example, you might think that a brand that sells 1500mg CBD oil in 30ml is higher in strength than 500mg in 10ml. But in actual fact, they are the same strength when you consider the concentration of the CBD in the oil (5% per drop).

That’s where the percentage marker comes in handy as this refers to the actual measure or concentration of the CBD (or MG) per drop. So, always consider the size of the bottle and the percentage as the milligrams alone won’t be comparing like for like.

HOW TO TAKE CBD

Now that we've discussed dosage, it's equally important to cover proper administration. A few techniques can improve effectiveness and decrease waste while the body processes CBD. Keep in mind that the Food Standards Agency recommends staying under 70mg per day. Try staying within this range while still testing different CBD dosages and listening to your body's response.

HOW TO TAKE CBD OIL

CBD oil is simple and easy to take, bottled in a glass vial with a pipette that allows you to easily administer your preferred dosage of cbd. To take, place a few drops of CBD oil directly under the tongue twice a day, with a pause of 30 to 60 seconds before swallowing.

This helps to give your body time to absorb the CBD directly into the bloodstream without it needing to go via your digestive system. The number of drops you take varies from strength to strength so look at our dosage guidelines per CBD strength in the table below.

CBD OIL STRENGTH, EXPLAINED

As we’ve mentioned, CBD is not prescriptive. Everyone is different so it’s important to experiment to find the strength that works best for you.

That’s why we offer a choice of two different oil strengths that you can choose from (500mg and 200mg) as well as high-strength bundles.

If you’re new to CBD, our Discovery Duo 7-day starter kit is a great way to compare our top two strengths with a week’s supply of our 2% (200 mg) and 5% (500 mg) oils so you can find your fit before committing to full size.

HOW OFTEN CAN YOU TAKE CBD OIL UNDER TONGUE

You can take CBD oil sublingually up to three times per day. Keep track of what dose you take each time. Make sure you're splitting up the daily dose so as not to take more than intended.

Distributing the dosage of CBD throughout the day as opposed to all at once extends its effects. Additionally, sublingual administration allows your body to absorb CBD more quickly via the tongue's mucus membrane.

HOW TO TAKE CBD CAPSULES

Taking CBD capsules is as easy as any other supplement you take.

Swallow one to three CBD capsules daily with a glass of water. Dosage varies depending on the ingredients so look at our specific recommendations per capsule in the table below.

HOW TO TAKE CBD SPRAYS

CBD sprays work similarly to oil drops but are slightly easier to use.

Shake the bottle of CBD oil first to ensure even distribution. Spray the product underneath your tongue and wait a few seconds before swallowing. If possible, avoid eating or drinking for a few minutes to allow all of the CBD to soak into the tongue's mucus membranes.

CAN YOU TAKE TOO MUCH CBD

While there is no evidence to suggest that you can overdose on CBD, the Food Standards Agency recommends not exceeding 70 mg of CBD per day, unless recommended to do so by a medical practitioner.

There are conflicting studies that suggest higher doses may better treat certain conditions. Researchers found that the effective dose for coping with substance abuse disorders is 400-800 mg per day. Other studies suggest doses of 300-600 mg for treating mood and stress-related conditions.

Until professionals agree upon a universal dosage, we advise following the Food Standards Agency's recommendation of 70 mg of CBD per day maximum.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TAKE CBD?

Many professionals advise taking CBD once or twice per day, but there is no across-the-board recommendation. It depends on how your metabolism and how your body reacts. Some people note better experiences taking CBD in the morning, and others prefer to take it at night. Other people prefer splitting their dosage of CBD between the morning and night.

It's generally accepted that you can take CBD from 1-3 times per day, so long as you split the dosage appropriately.

WHAT TIME OF THE DAY SHOULD I TAKE CBD?

There is no ‘right’ time or best time of day to take CBD oil – it depends on what works best for you and when you’re more likely to remember to take it. You can take CBD oil or capsules throughout the day – morning, afternoon or night. We recommend creating a consistent morning and night-time routine.

BE CONSISTENT It’s really consistency that’s key more than when you take it. Studies show that CBD metabolism is cumulative so be sure to take it twice a day, ideally, at the same time for best results.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE STRENGTH

Use the following formula to determine the strength of your CBD and the proper CBD dosage.

[CBD IN MG] ÷ [BOTTLE SIZE IN ML] = [CBD IN MG/ML]

For example,

CBII's high-strength oil is 10 mL and contains 500 mg of CBD.

[500 MG] ÷ [10 ML] = [50 MG/ML]

CAN I TAKE MULTIPLE CBD PRODUCTS TOGETHER?

Absolutely, you can take both CBD oils, capsules or gummies at the same time as long as you don’t exceed the Food Standards Agency’s recommended CBD dosage of 70 mg a day. In fact, many customers take multiple products together for the maximum feel-good benefits.

We recommend starting with the lower intake suggestion for both products and monitoring how you feel as you increase gradually.

HOW CAN I TELL IF CBD IS WORKING?

CBD affects everyone differently and sometimes you may feel the difference overnight, while for others it can take a little longer.

Try to take a few moments to reflect each day… The key is to tune in to how you feel, and most importantly what you don’t feel - that's the only way you can fine tune your personal CBD dosage.

It may be a subtle sense of overall wellbeing, more energy to tackle the day, or a fading away of overwhelming worries. We recommend keeping a diary to monitor what’s working for you.

Wrapping Up: How Much CBD Should I Take?

CBD is personal and the way the body reacts to CBD varies from person to person, so finding the right cbd dosage may take some trial and error. We recommend starting low and going slow, gradually increasing your intake until you find your sweet spot. Take a look at our dosage tables above for recommendations.
